A Gvozdika SAU crew destroyed a mortar and an AFU UAV launch site in the SSE zone

Artillerymen of the separate Guards motorized rifle brigade of the Southern group of troops from the self-propelled artillery unit (SAU) 2S1 "Gvozdika" destroyed the position of an enemy mortar and the place of launching an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) together with the calculation on the Donetsk direction of the special military operation (SMO) zone. This was reported by the Russian Defense Ministry on December 23.

Thus, in the Donetsk direction of the Special Military Operation (SMO), after detecting the position of a mortar and the place of launching the enemy's drone not far from the line of contact, the UAV team hit the identified targets with 122-millimeter shells of the Gvozdika SAU. Objective control data confirmed the destruction of the target.

"We work on any targets we are given. This is the enemy's personnel and equipment - at least wheeled, at least tracked. <...> In offensive conditions, the first task is to support our infantry. We suppress fire points that affect our infantry, slow down its advance. We are given targets, we suppress them, destroy them. That's what we're going for, we're striving for, and we're doing our job. We have correctors from the control platoon. They also correct us. They raise their bird in the sky, and we work together with them," said the commander of the artillery battery with the call sign Mityai.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Gvozdika self-propelled howitzer has a 360-degree turret rotation, which allows it to quickly change the direction of fire. Fire from the leading edge is corrected by reconnaissance. The drones of the Russian Armed Forces (AF) are on duty in the sky around the clock. With the support of artillery and heavy armored vehicles, the assault groups are gradually advancing deep into the AFU defenses, pushing the enemy further and further out.

Earlier, on December 18, the 122-millimeter towed howitzer D-30 of the separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Southern Group of Forces destroyed an AFU stronghold in the Kurakhovskoye direction. The accumulation of AFU personnel was detected by reconnaissance units using UAVs.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
