Prior to that, on December 21, Trump announced that television producer Mark Barnett had been appointed as the new U.S. special envoy to the United Kingdom. He specified that Barnett will be engaged in strengthening diplomatic relations between the UK and the US, as well as improve trade and investment opportunities between the countries.

On December 15, it was reported that Trump appointed former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Allen Grenell as the head of state's envoy for special assignments.
