The Kremlin called Oreshnik a revolution in the arms industry
Russian President Vladimir Putin 's suggestion of a duel with the West, voiced during the "Results of the Year" program on December 19, was a response to statements about alleged vulnerabilities in the missile system. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on December 21.
"It was an answer to a question. The question was that experts in the West claim that this weapon system has vulnerabilities," he said in response to a related TASS question.
In addition, Peskov called the Russian Oreshnik missile a revolution in weaponry.
"This is indeed an absolute revolution in weapons technology," the Kremlin spokesman said.
During the "Results of the Year" on December 19, the head of state said that the enemy has no chance to shoot down Oreshnik missiles. He also suggested that experts organize a "high-tech duel of the XXI century," during which a target site would be identified, where air defense and missile defense forces would be concentrated, and the Russian military would strike there with the "Oreshnik."
Commenting on Putin's statement, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov emphasized that Russia is confident in the strength of its weapons and their ability to ensure the state's security.
Putin announced the live-fire test of the Oreshnik ballistic missile, one of Russia's newest medium-range missile systems, on Nov. 21. The step was taken in response to the escalation by Western countries in Ukraine. In the following days, the head of state clarified that Russia would continue testing and that a decision on mass production of the missiles had already been made.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in the region.
