The Kremlin promised Abkhazia a response on humanitarian supply of electricity


Abkhazia will receive a response from Russia on the issue of humanitarian supply of electricity. This was announced by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on December 21.
"When it asks, there will be (an answer. - Ed.), of course. Abkhazia is our native country. We recognize them as a state. They are our neighbors. We wish them stability and prosperity, and happiness," Peskov answered the corresponding question of "RIA Novosti".
Earlier in the day, acting Abkhaz President Badra Gunba said in his address to the nation that he had requested a humanitarian supply of electricity from Russia due to the crisis in the republic.
On December 9, it was announced about the closure of schools and kindergartens in Abkhazia due to the emergency in the energy sector. The measures taken will be in effect for a week. On December 11, electricity was cut off throughout the territory of Abkhazia after the shutdown of the Inguri hydroelectric power plant due to critically low water levels.
The situation with electricity was aggravated against the background of suspension of Russian aid programs to Abkhazia and political crisis in the republic. On November 12, clashes occurred in the capital near the building of the State Security Service of Abkhazia. On November 19, Aslan Bzhania submitted his resignation from the post of president of the republic, the same day Vice-President of Abkhazia Badra Gunba became acting head of state.
On December 10, the Kremlin spokesman said that Russia and Abkhazia were discussing investment agreement and social payments to the residents of the republic.
