A serviceman of the 57th Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Yevhen Godunko, shared on 21 December how he surrendered to the Russian military by waving to a drone.

The Ukrainian soldier shared that he wanted to sit out in the rear rather than go to the front line. He was able to do so for a while, but was transferred to the 57th Brigade and brought in to drive a GAZ-66 water truck.

"We were driven to Volchansk (Kharkiv region. - Ed.). We went in at night. We had to go to one position, we were told over the radio that we were going to help the sumizhniki," Godunko shared.

According to him, the AFU servicemen stayed there for 6-7 days. He was in a half-destroyed building with his fellow servicemen until an anti-tank mine was thrown at him. As a result of the impact, he was the only survivor, suffering an arm injury.

Godunko added that he came out and "saw a bunch of drones." He lit a cigarette and raised his hand, attracting the attention of a Russian drone, which guided him to members of the Russian Armed Forces (AF).

He also noted that the command did not give the brigade clear instructions and tasks, nor were they told to defend themselves. Addressing his fellow servicemen, Godunko called on them to give up resistance, leave the military unit unauthorized and, if possible, surrender as prisoners of war.

Earlier, on December 19, captured AFU soldier Grigory Shinkarev shared that in Kursk region the command ordered to kill civilians speaking Russian. He also noted that commanders beat servicemen, broke their arms and legs, and subjected them to shooting.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
