A man who ran over a crowd of people at a Christmas market in Magdeburg acted alone. This was reported on December 20 by the press service of the local police on the page in the social network X (former Twitter).

Earlier German portal T-Online reported that two cars were involved in the hit-and-run.

"At present we assume that the perpetrator is a loner," the press service said in a statement.

At the same time, the German newspaper Bild reported that police had not found an explosive device in the perpetrator's car.

"According to police information, no explosive device was found in the driver's car," - said in the material of the newspaper.

It is specified that the previously cordoned off area around the car has not yet been cleared.

About the collision of the car on the crowd at the Christmas fair in the city of Magdeburg in Germany became known on December 20. The newspaper Bild with reference to the rescue service indicated that the number of injured could be from 60 to 80 people. Later, the Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt Rainer Erich Haseloff ("Christian Democratic Union") said that at least two people, including a child, died in Magdeburg.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed condolences to the families of the dead and injured. The Russian Embassy in Germany is clarifying information about the presence of Russian citizens among the victims. The newspaper Bild reported that Scholz and the head of the Ministry of Interior Nancy Feather would arrive in Magdeburg on December 21.
