Polish president shocked by Magdeburg incident


Polish President Andrzej Duda on Dec. 20 said he was shocked by the incident at a Christmas fair in Magdeburg and expressed words of support for the families of the victims.
"Tragic news from Germany. I am shocked by the brutal attack on the Christmas fair in Magdeburg. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the injured," he wrote on his page on the social network X (former Twitter).
The Polish Foreign Ministry also expressed condolences to the families of those killed and injured in Magdeburg.
"We express our deepest condolences to the victims and families of the victims of the terrorist attack in Magdeburg," the ministry's press service said in X.
In addition, the Polish Foreign Ministry noted that this situation turns into a tragedy "the time of merry holidays".
About the collision of a car into a crowd in the city of Magdeburg in Germany became known earlier in the day. The newspaper Bild, citing the rescue service, indicated that the number of injured could be from 60 to 80 people. Later, the Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt Rainer Erich Haseloff ("Christian Democratic Union") said that at least two people, including a child, were killed in Magdeburg.

Later, Die Welt newspaper reported the arrest of a suspect in a hit-and-run attack on a crowd in Magdeburg. It also reported an unknown object in the back seat of the car, which experts believe may contain an explosive device.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed condolences to the families of the dead and injured. The Russian Embassy in Germany is clarifying information about the presence of Russian citizens among the victims. The Bild newspaper reported that Scholz and Interior Minister Nancy Feather would arrive in Magdeburg on December 21.
