The Project 885M (Yasen-M) nuclear-powered submarine Arkhangelsk and the Project 995A (Borei-A) strategic nuclear-powered submarine cruiser Knyaz Pozharsky will soon be commissioned into the Russian Navy. This was announced on December 20 by Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, Chief of the Russian Navy, during his visit to the Sevmash enterprise in Severodvinsk, where both vessels are built.

"In the near future, the Navy will receive the Arkhangelsk cruiser into its composition. The nuclear-powered submarine cruiser "Knyaz Pozharsky" is at the testing stage and will also soon join the submarine forces of our Navy," Moiseyev said.

He congratulated Sevmash employees on the 85th anniversary of the enterprise and noted that its main task is to build nuclear-powered submarines, which the employees are successfully coping with. The need to have such ships in the fleet is dictated by the need for effective and modern weapons, which is exactly what strategic and multi-purpose nuclear submarines carry.

Earlier, on December 6, it was reported that the Arkhangelsk nuclear submarine will be handed over to the Navy in the summer of 2025. The submarine cruiser-missile carrier Knyaz Pozharsky will join the Russian Navy in June 2025.

On December 8, the American magazine The National Interest (TNI) pointed out that Western countries in vain underestimate nuclear submarines of Project 885M ("Yasen-M"), because they are able to cover long distances while remaining completely invisible. They can carry hypersonic Zirkon cruise missiles, which can overcome any missile defense system and inflict "almost biblical-level destruction."

Before that, on October 22, TNI gave the first two lines of its rating of the best submarines of 2024 to the submarines of projects 945A Kondor and 885 Yasen-M. The magazine claims that these submarines were designed ostensibly specifically for search-and-destroy missions against U.S. submarines.
