Ukraine will have to make a fundamental choice about whether to agree to hold talks on conflict resolution. This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in an interview with the MSNBC TV channel on December 20.

"The Ukrainians will have to make fundamental decisions about whether to continue fighting or to negotiate and attempt a ceasefire," the TV channel quotes him as saying.

At the same time, Blinken urged the West to continue supporting Kiev to strengthen its position in the war zone. According to him, this will allegedly strengthen the position of Ukraine and the administration of US President-elect Donald Trump in potential negotiations.

Earlier in the day, European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas urged against pushing Ukraine to negotiate with Russia. In her opinion, it is pointless, it is necessary to make sure of security guarantees to Kiev. She added that Russian leader Vladimir Putin allegedly does not want peace.

Before that, on December 13, Alexander Konkov, an associate professor at the political science department of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, explaining the Ukrainian leader's rejection of any proposals to resume negotiations with Russia, said that Zelensky's policy is kept on the continuation of hostilities.

On December 9, it became known that Zelensky (term expired in May) at a trilateral meeting with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron held at the Elysee Palace discussed freezing the conflict with Russia. It was noted that the Ukrainian leader does not want to stop fighting without receiving security guarantees, namely NATO membership or the deployment of Western troops in Ukraine.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
