The Assumption Cathedral of the 18th century was damaged after the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) struck the town of Rylsk, Kursk Region. An employee of the cathedral told Izvestia on December 20.

She noted that there were no casualties among the people: there was only one woman on the territory of the church, she was all right. However, the building itself is in need of repair.

"All the windows and doors were blown out by the blast wave, the locks were torn out. We did not examine the dome or the roof. Only what we could visually see. <...> All the windows were blown out, how many of them there were," the employee said.

She added that the warehouses were also affected.

Earlier in the day, Alexander Khinshtein, the region's acting governor, reported that the town of Rylsk had been subjected to a massive missile attack by the AFU. He noted that Ukrainian militants deliberately targeted peaceful social facilities.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under par. "b" part 3 of article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Terrorist act"). Later it became known that the impact killed six people, including one child. 10 injured were taken to the Central District Hospital of the city.

Ukrainian militants attacked Russian positions in the border areas of the Kursk region on August 6. The situation in the region was recognized as a federal emergency. The liquidation of the AFU units invading the Russian territory is underway.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
