Every year on the third Saturday of December in Russia, realtors - specialists who act as intermediaries in real estate transactions - celebrate their professional holiday. They help clients to solve such important life tasks as buying, selling or renting housing. In 2024, the holiday falls on December 21. History and meaning of the Day of the Realtor in 2024

Realtor Day in Russia is traditionally celebrated in December. For the first time with the initiative to hold it in 1996, activists of the Moscow Professional Guild, who wanted to create a platform to strengthen the professional community and popularize the profession.

The real estate market in Russia and the realtor profession began to form relatively recently, at the end of the last century. However, their separate elements existed long before the emergence of modern real estate agencies. Thus, at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries in large cities of the Russian Empire worked intermediaries who helped the owners of residential premises to find buyers or tenants.

After the revolution of 1917 and the establishment of Soviet power, the real estate market practically disappeared, private property was liquidated, and real estate was transferred to the state. The sale and purchase of housing was replaced by the distribution of apartments, exchanges and so-called exchanges through the state housing authorities. During this period, there was no real estate profession in the modern sense.

With the transition to a market economy in the 1990s and the beginning of mass privatization of housing, citizens were able to buy, sell and rent real estate, which created a demand for intermediaries able to navigate the new market. The first real estate agencies began to appear in major cities as early as 1991-1992, offering services to find buyers, tenants and transaction support.

The establishment of real estate activity went in parallel with the creation of the regulatory framework. In the 1990s, laws regulating the real estate market, establishing the rules of transactions, which increased the legal security of transactions.

In 1992 the Russian Guild of Realtors (RGR) was established - the first professional organization, which was engaged in standardization of work in the real estate market, training of specialists and development of ethical standards.

In 1996, the process of forming regional realtor guilds began. At the state level was introduced a mandatory condition for licensing the activities of a real estate specialist.

Since the early 2000s, more and more attention has been paid to realtor training. There appeared specialized courses and programs in universities, as well as a system of voluntary certification, confirming the qualifications of specialists.

In the XXI century, the realtor profession is closely connected with new technologies. Internet platforms for placing advertisements, virtual tours of apartments, the use of artificial intelligence to evaluate real estate have become an integral part of the work.

On Realtor Day, real estate agencies hold solemn meetings, where they honor the best employees, give awards and conduct motivational trainings. These events are accompanied by informal meetings and exchange of professional experience.

Some companies on holiday offer discounts on their services or provide free consultations. This helps to increase confidence in the profession and attract new clients.
