- Shmygal reported on Ukraine's plan to stop gas transit from Russia on the morning of January 1

The transit of Russian gas through Ukraine will stop at 7:00 (8:00 Moscow time) on January 1, 2025. This was announced by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal on December 20.
"As of today, we understand that the gas transit agreement ends on January 1, 2025. At 7:00 physically transit will be shut off in connection with the completion of this agreement," - said the head of the government, his words reports the agency "RBC-Ukraine".
Shmygal noted that the resumption of transit will be possible at the request of the European Commission (EC), but in the case if it will be pumped not Russian gas. The Prime Minister said that Kiev now has to continue fuel transit because of the obligation to fulfill the European Energy Charter, approved in 1991.
Earlier in the day, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo said that if Ukraine stops the transit of Russian gas intended for the European republic through its territory, a serious conflict could occur. In addition, Fitzo drew attention to the fact that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose powers expired on May 20, put forward impossible conditions for the restoration of gas transit and thus completely ruled out this possibility.
Former Moldovan Prime Minister Vasyl Tarlev told Izvestia on December 18 that the stoppage of Russian gas transit through Ukraine had led the republic to an energy crisis and called on Chisinau to resume talks with Moscow on the topic.
The Bloomberg agency reported on December 17 that major Central European companies signed a declaration supporting the continuation of gas transit through Ukraine in 2025. At the same time, the share of imported gas from Russia in the total number of supplies to Europe has increased again, and Moscow retains its position as one of the largest suppliers of such fuel to the EU.
The Russian leadership has repeatedly pointed out that the country has not given up transit gas supplies to Europe, but to extend them, European countries must negotiate with Kiev. According to analyst Ihor Yushkov, stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine in January threatens Europe with a significant price hike, which will affect households and businesses.
