Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov handed over the "Gold Star" of the Hero of the Russian Federation to the widow of the widow of the deceased head of the radiation, chemical and biological protection troops, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov. "Igor Kirillov took place as a military leader, having traveled a path worthy of an officer, from a platoon commander to the head of the RCDBZ troops," Belousov said.
He noted that the lieutenant general was an outstanding scientist who contributed to the development of a vaccine against coronavirus and was awarded the title of Hero of Labor for his work. Belousov added that Kirillov's entire life was dedicated to serving the Motherland.
The head of the Defense Ministry noted the importance of Kirillov's continuation of his children's work, pointing out that it speaks volumes.
"We will keep the memory of Igor Anatolievich in our hearts," the minister summarized.
Belousov also handed over the Order of Courage to the widow of Lieutenant Colonel Ilya Polikarpov, who died with Kirillov.
Earlier on December 20, Kirillov's funeral took place on the territory of the Federal War Memorial "Pantheon of Defenders of the Fatherland" of the Russian Defense Ministry. Belousov and Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu came to the ceremony to bid farewell to the general.
Kirillov and his assistant were killed on the morning of December 17 by an explosive device that was placed in a scooter near the entrance of an apartment building on Ryazansky Avenue in Moscow. A criminal case of murder, terrorist act and illegal arms trafficking was opened.
The very next day the FSB reported the detention of the 29-year-old suspect Akhmad Kurbanov. During interrogation, he said that he had been recruited by the special services of Ukraine. The attacker could face punishment up to life imprisonment. Later, on December 19, the suspect was investigated. On the same day, the Basmanny court of Moscow arrested Kurbanov until February 17.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 19 that the murder of the general and his aide was committed in a way that was dangerous for many. He characterized the crime as a terrorist act.
