Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov and Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu said farewell to Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops of the Russian Armed Forces (AF), on Friday, December 20.

The funeral of the lieutenant general took place that day on the territory of the Federal War Memorial "Pantheon of Defenders of the Fatherland" of the Russian Defense Ministry, RIA Novosti correspondent reports.

Kirillov and his assistant died on the morning of December 17 as a result of detonation of an explosive device that was placed in a scooter near the entrance of an apartment building on Ryazansky Avenue in Moscow. A criminal case of murder, terrorist act and illegal arms trafficking was opened.

The very next day the FSB reported the detention of the 29-year-old suspect Akhmad Kurbanov. During interrogation, he said that he had been recruited by the special services of Ukraine. The attacker could face punishment up to life imprisonment. Later, on December 19, the suspect was investigated. On the same day, the Basmanny court of Moscow arrested Kurbanov until February 17.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 19 that the murder of the general and his aide was committed in a way that was dangerous to many. He characterized the crime as a terrorist act.
