Court arrests driver of freight train involved in accident near Murmansk

Driver Alexei Zychkov, whose freight train collided with a passenger train Murmansk - St. Petersburg, has been remanded in custody. This was reported by a correspondent of "Izvestia" from the courtroom on December 20.

The measure of restraint is valid until February 18, 2025.

The session was held in the Kandalaksha district court. The man is charged under part 3 of article 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of the rules of safety of movement and operation of railway transport, resulting in the death of two persons").

Before the hearing, Zychkov told the Izvestia reporter that he admits guilt and is very remorseful. According to the man, the cause of the accident was a coincidence of human and technical factors.

Thecollision of the two trains occurred on December 18 at the arrival of the passenger train at Knyazhaya station. The passenger train, traveling on the route Murmansk - St. Petersburg, collided with a freight train. As a result of the accident, three cars of the passenger train and several freight cars derailed.

According to the latest information, the collision killed two people, 42 people were injured. According to the Ministry of Health, 10 people are in serious condition, three of them are children.

Seven victims were taken to regional medical centers, doctors keep their condition under control. In addition, on December 19, one of the injured children was transferred to a hospital in St. Petersburg.

A criminal case under Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation was initiated on the fact of the accident. Preliminary, the collision of the trains occurred because a faulty freight train with ore spontaneously left the parking place and crashed into the tail cars of the passenger train.
