Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo has said that President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose term of office expired in May, has completely ruled out the possibility of continuing gas transit through Ukraine. He said this to journalists on December 20 following the European Union (EU) summit in Brussels.

Fitzo said that the Ukrainian side agreed to continue transit on the condition that Russia would not pay for supplies until the conflict is over.

"He absolutely ruled it out and made proposals that seem absurd to me <...> What kind of fool would give us gas for free?" the prime minister said, his words quoted by TASS.

The Prime Minister noted that Ukraine by its actions harms the economic interests not only of Slovakia, but also of the European Union as a whole.

"As soon as Ukraine stops gas transit, gas will become more expensive. It will be painful for the whole EU," Fitzo added.

With all this situation in the European Union there is no consensus on the solution of this topic, adds "Gazeta.Ru".

Earlier, on December 18, Robert Fitzo urged European allies to find a way to continue supplying Russian gas through Ukraine when the transit agreement expires. According to Fitzo, Slovakia, which is one of the key buyers of gas from Russia, risks losing annual revenue of €500m ($525m) from transit fees.
