US President-elect Donald Trump threatened the European Union (EU) with increased import duties if the association does not increase purchases of American energy resources. The corresponding post the politician published on December 20 on his page in the social network Truth Social.

"I told the European Union that they must make up the huge deficit with the United States through large-scale purchases of our oil and gas," Trump wrote.

If the European Union does not increase purchases, "it will face tariffs to the fullest," the president-elect threatened.

Earlier, on November 20, The Washington Post (WP) reported that the trade duties that Trump is going to introduce could cause serious damage to EU countries. It is specified that the major European economies are currently already lagging behind the United States as a result of the pandemic. According to economists, "protectionist measures of Trump" may entail further recession in Europe and complicate the relations of allies.

Before that, on November 6, it became known about the fears of the European Union that after the election of Trump may start a new trade war between the countries of the association and Washington. It was noted that in 2018, as President of the United States, Trump, for reasons of national security, introduced a duty on steel at a rate of 7% and a tariff on imports of aluminum with a rate of 10%.

The election of the 47th president of the United States was held on November 5. In the popular vote, Trump received 50% of the vote, while Kamala Harris received 48.4%. Later, the politician, speaking to supporters, said that her goal as head of state considers the end of military conflicts in the world. The president-elect will take office on January 20, 2025.
