Military engineers of the separate engineer-sapper battalion of the Southern Group of Forces are demining the Donetsk People's Republic's (DNR) Ukrainsk, which was liberated from the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), from explosive objects. This was reported by the Russian Defense Ministry on December 20.

In the liberated settlement, units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation with the help of modern mine detectors conduct engineering reconnaissance of the area, demining of roads, yards and adjacent territories. At the same time, they find enemy caches, unexploded shells, dumps, booby-trapped objects, which Ukrainian militants disguise as children's toys and household items.

It is specified that the sappers had to neutralize various types of mines, both Soviet and foreign-made, as well as unexploded elements of cluster munitions. In this case, the enemy often sets cunning traps. For example, there are a lot of stretch marks hidden in unexpected places.

When a dangerous object is detected, sappers carry the explosive device to a safe place or destroy it on the spot remotely, using drops from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

"In the city, more often than not, there are drops that have not exploded. Also cluster so-called bells, shells that have not exploded. Are found both on the plots and in houses that have penetrated, for example, the building, the roof, but they did not explode. The sappers find it all, it is all examined and destroyed. We clean completely houses, territories, playgrounds. All of this is inspected by sappers, checked. The enemy military from the Ukrainian side do not consider the civilian population," said the commander of the engineer-sapper platoon with the call sign Bely.

According to the Defense Ministry, Russian sappers are often approached for help by local residents who left the city after the fighting began and have now returned. The civilians ask to check their houses and plots for explosive objects.

The work of the Russian Armed Forces sappers is complicated by the difficult conditions in the immediate vicinity of the line of contact, due to which the threat from the air is also increased. The enemy is actively using reconnaissance UAVs and FPV attack drones.

Earlier, on December 12, Russian servicemen demined the village of Pavlovka from AFU shells. Russian servicemen work in anti-shrapnel suits and with the help of modern mine detectors conduct engineering reconnaissance of the area, clear roads and homestead plots.

Prior to that, on December 10, it became known about the demining work in the locality of Selidovo in the DNR, which was liberated during the special military operation (SMO). Despite the fact that the enemy has been pushed back to a considerable distance, Ukrainian militants are still dropping anti-tank mines with the help of industrial drones.

On this day, it was also reported that Ukraine is using Western-made shells, which are banned internationally, to mine territories. By doing so, Kiev is trying to slow down the advance of Russian troops along the entire line of contact.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by the Russian Federation on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
