Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose term in office expired on May 20, said on December 19 that the country cannot be in a state of frozen conflict.

"We cannot live with a frozen conflict on our territory," Reuters quoted him as saying.

In his opinion, any cessation of hostilities must be long-term.

Earlier in the day, European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas urged not to push Ukraine to negotiate with Russia. In her opinion, it is pointless, it is necessary to make sure of security guarantees to Kiev. She added that the Russian leader allegedly does not want peace.

Before that, on December 13, Alexander Konkov, an associate professor of the political science department at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, explaining the Ukrainian leader's rejection of any proposals to resume negotiations with Russia, said that Zelensky's policy was based on the continuation of hostilities.

On December 9, it became known that Zelensky at the trilateral meeting with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron held at the Elysee Palace discussed the freezing of the conflict with Russia. It was noted that the Ukrainian leader did not want to stop hostilities without receiving security guarantees, namely NATO membership or the deployment of Western troops in Ukraine.

At the same time, Trump said that the head of the Kiev regime would like to "make a deal" with Russia. According to him, it is necessary to immediately cease fire and start negotiations, otherwise the Ukrainian conflict may worsen. In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recalled that Putin has repeatedly said that Russia is open to negotiations on Ukraine and welcomes proposals from China, India, Brazil and other countries.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
