During his working trip to Algeria, Russian Presidential Special Envoy for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed the situation in the Middle East with the country's leader Abdelmajid Tebbun and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. This was reported in the Russian Foreign Ministry on December 19.

"Special attention was paid to the situation in Syria, Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, the situation in North Africa and the Sahara-Sahel region. At the same time, they noted the proximity or coincidence of the principled approaches of Moscow and Algeria, based on the non-alternative of peaceful settlement of existing conflicts and crisis situations in the Middle East and Africa," the report says.

It is specified that during the conversation the unchanging course of Moscow and Algeria on further strengthening of traditionally friendly relations was confirmed. In addition, the participants of the meeting noted the important role of the mixed intergovernmental Russian-Algerian commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation in coordinating the promotion of bilateral relations between the countries.

Earlier, on September 6, Abdelali Hassani Cherif, the leader of the Algerian party "Movement of Society for Peace" advocated the development of relations with Russia. Cherif believes that the potential accession of Algeria to the BRICS association will help to better realize the economic potential of the country.

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian radical movement Hamas subjected the territory of Israel to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
