- EU leaders instructed the European Commission to study the possibility of assistance to Moldova's energy sector

Following the summit in Brussels, EU leaders instructed the European Commission to consider the possibility of helping Moldova's energy sector as soon as possible. The corresponding statement was published on December 19 on the website of the European Council.
"The European Council invites the European Commission to urgently explore further ways to help Moldova strengthen its energy security," the statement reads.
Earlier, on December 18, former Moldovan Prime Minister Vasily Tarlev told Izvestia that Moldova was in an energy crisis due to the EU's anti-Russian policy and the stoppage of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. He also emphasized that the current leadership of the republic, represented by President Maia Sandu, is leading the country to a humanitarian catastrophe.
Before that, on December 12, the Moldovan parliament reported that from December 16, a state of emergency (state of emergency) for a 60-day period was introduced in the country due to the threat of a humanitarian crisis in connection with the possible cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine.
On the same day, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo said that the country was negotiating the continuation of gas supplies through Ukrainian territory. At the same time, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal said on December 16 that Kiev was not going to prolong the gas transit agreement.
The Bloomberg agency quoted a statement by Slovak gas company SPP as saying that key Central European companies had signed a declaration supporting the continuation of gas transit through Ukraine in 2025.
On 6 November, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak pointed out that European countries are interested in the continuation of gas transit from Russia through Ukraine, and the Russian side is ready to supply the energy resource. At the same time, he noted that due to Ukraine's unreliability in this area, a number of states were in a difficult situation.
