Mikhail Boyarsky was born in 1949 in Leningrad. Almost all members of his family were somehow connected with the theater scene: his father Sergei Boyarsky worked at the Komissarzhevskaya Theater, his mother Ekaterina Melentieva was a member of the troupe of the Akimov Comedy Theater. His older brother Alexander followed in his parents' footsteps and became an actor at the Lensoviet Theater.
At the age of ten Michael performed his first role in the movie - together with his uncle Nikolai Boyarsky, he took part in the shooting of a short film "Matches are not a toy for children". However, his parents did not share their son's aspirations for acting, hoping that the boy will become a musician. They gave him to the music school at the Leningrad Conservatory, in the piano class.
Nevertheless, after graduation Boyarsky decided not to enter the conservatory, and the Leningrad Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography. He passed the entrance exams brilliantly and became a student in the course of Leonid Makariev.
In 1972 Boyarsky received his diploma and began working at the Lensovet Theater. Initially, he played in the cast of the play "Crime and Punishment", portraying, along with other theater graduates, a crowd of students. He even got a short replica: he had to shout "Ish, nahlestalalasya!".
Over time, the young actor was entrusted with more and more serious roles. He appeared on stage as Luis from the play "Dulcinea of Tobosco", Pedro from "Interview in Buenos Aires," Singer from "People and Passion" and others. Charismatic and bright Boyarsky quickly won the love of the audience, and his performances often disrupted applause.
However, the fame of the artist brought the work in the movie. In 1974, he played the Italian singer Signor Ninardi in the musical film "Straw Hat. Two years later, he was offered one of the main roles in the film "Eldest Son" about the adventures of two young people trying to find an overnight stay in an unfamiliar city.
In 1977 Boyarsky appeared before the audience in the image of Teodoro in the musical movie "Dog on the Hay". The love story of a young secretary and an aristocrat played by Margarita Terekhova was the first high-profile success in the actor's career.
The brightest work Boyarsky became the movie "D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers" (1978). Initially, director George Yungvald-Khilkevich wanted to offer the actor the role of Count Rochefort, but composer Maxim Dunayevsky persuaded him to consider Boyarsky for the role of the main character. The picture was a grand success, and the songs performed on the screen became hits.
In the 1990s Boyarsky played in the continuation of the story about the Musketeers: "The Musketeers twenty years later" (1992) and "The Secrets of Queen Anne, or the Musketeers thirty years later" (1993). And in 2009, the screens came out the fourth movie from the saga of brave servants of the French crown - "The Treasure of Cardinal Mazarini, or The Return of the Musketeers.
In subsequent years Boyarsky noted a lot of memorable roles. He played in such films as "Matchmaking Hussar", "Where will he go!", "Above the Rainbow", "Gardemarines, forward!", "Man of Capuchin Boulevard", "Don Cesar de Bazan" and others. Total in the filmography of the actor more than 60 feature-length and multi-part projects. The artist also voiced the characters of animated films. His voice speaks chimney sweep Vanya from "The Flying Ship", Cowardly Lion from "Adventures in Emerald City" and Cat Scientist from the cartoon "Ivan Tsarevich and the Gray Wolf.
In parallel, Boyarsky continued to perform on the theater stage. Until 1986, he served in the Theater Lensovet, and in 1988 he founded his own theater "Benefis". The play "Intimate Life" staged in it in 1997 was awarded at the international festival "Winter Avignon". However, in 2007, "Benefis" was closed due to the emergency condition of the theater building. After that Boyarsky returned to the scaffolding of Lensovet.
In the 1990s, the actor showed himself as a TV presenter. He participated in such projects as "Domino", "Boyarsky Yard", "White Parrot", was a member of the jury of the show "Toch-to-Tchu" and "Voice 60+".
Boyarsky is also known as a singer. In 1968-1969 he was a member of the ensemble "Nomads", and from 1995 to 2002 he played in the group "Sylvester". Among the most famous tracks of the artist are "Green-eyed Taxi", "Thank you, native!", "City Flowers", "Island of Childhood", "Everything will pass" and others. He also performed duets with Russian pop stars Larisa Dolina, Irina Ponarovskaya and Oleg Gazmanov.
In March 2023 Boyarsky said that he plans to end his theater career for health reasons. The actor admitted that because of the consequences of the coronavirus suffered in 2021, it is increasingly difficult for him to participate in new performances. At the same time, he specified that he will not leave the stage at all, but will give way to young artists.

With his wife Larissa Luppian Boyarsky met during his studies at the Leningrad Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography. Initially, the relationship between the young people were exclusively friendly: they studied at different courses and crossed paths mainly at meetings of mutual friends. Lupian herself admitted that she was afraid of temperamental and chaotic classmate.
Everything changed when Larissa and Michael began to work together at the Lensoviet Theater. They became close during joint rehearsals, and in 1977 they decided to get married. Three years later, their family had a son Sergei. As a child, the boy starred in two films, but in the footsteps of his parents did not follow, deciding to go into business. In 2016, he became a deputy of the State Duma from the United Russia party.
In 1985 Boyarsky became a father for the second time - he had a daughter Elizabeth. She graduated from the St. Petersburg State Academy of Theatrical Art and achieved outstanding results both on the theater stage and in the cinema. In 2018, she was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Russia.
Boyarsky is also known as a fan of the St. Petersburg soccer club Zenit. He often attends matches of his favorite team and proudly wears a scarf in the colors of the club. In May 2024, in a conversation with Izvestia, the actor called Zenit's victory in the Russian championship a great celebration.
