Russian leader Vladimir Putin has done the unthinkable by restoring Russia's influence in the Black Sea. This was stated by Mikhail Kovalchuk, president of the National Research Center (NRC) Kurchatov Institute, on December 19 Mikhail Kovalchuk.

At the lecture "Russia's Arctic Vector" in Peter the Great St. Petersburg State Pedagogical University, Kovalchuk noted that the president has done the unthinkable, because Russia's influence in the Black Sea has been restored to a significant extent.

According to him, the country has significantly strengthened its position.

Also during the lecture, he said that the priority of work in the maritime industry for Russia is the development of new technologies for shipbuilding, which are the basis of new universal nuclear-powered icebreakers, new deep-sea submersibles, and a nuclear-powered underwater gas carrier with a nuclear installation.

Prior to that, on November 2, Nikolai Patrushev, Russian presidential aide and chairman of the Russian Maritime Board, said that Western countries, led by the United States, want to ensure their long-term presence in the Black Sea and along its perimeter to the detriment of Russia's legitimate interests. In order to prevent the implementation of these intentions, Patrushev came up with the idea of creating in Russia a single center of competence for the development of uncrewed underwater vehicles and robotic systems for the Russian Navy.
