The decision to launch a special military operation (SMO) of Russia in Ukraine should have been taken even earlier. Russian President Vladimir Putin said this on 19 December during the "Results of the Year" program.

This is how the head of state responded to the question whether he would not have changed his decision to start the SSO if there was a possibility to go back to February 2022.

"Such, hypothetical question - if it was possible to return. You know, if you could look at the situation, knowing what's going on now, the situation in 2021 - what would I think about? That this decision that was made in early 2022 should have been made earlier - that's the first thing. And the second - knowing about it, we should have just started preparing for these events, including the SWO," Putin said.

He noted that the decision on the special operation was made because it was impossible to stand still, to tolerate and wait for the situation for Russia to start deteriorating. Since the Kiev regime had already openly announced at that time that it did not intend to fulfill the Minsk agreements. In addition, Ukraine claimed weapons of mass destruction.

The President also shared that for almost three years, during which the special operation to protect Donbass has been going on, he began to joke and laugh less. He noted that he has begun to improve his skills in finding key issues and improving his ability to focus attention and energy on their solution.

On the eve, December 18, the head of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov said that the Russian army in 2024 has fulfilled all the tasks set before it by the country's leadership. In addition, the units have gained a lot of practical experience during combat work. Armaments and military equipment are being updated in the troops.

The direct line with Vladimir Putin in 2024 is combined with a press conference for the media. The format called "Results of the Year with Vladimir Putin" allows the president to convey his position not only on citizens' issues, but also on the state and world agenda, which is often asked by journalists. Representatives of Western media and foreign journalists accredited in the Russian Federation also received invitations to the event.
