Lithuania and some other European Union (EU) countries have emptied their arms depots, which means that they have nothing to hand over to Ukraine. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda told journalists on 19 December.

"Of course, we have to supply [Ukraine] with weapons, especially those countries that still have weapons in their warehouses. The warehouses in my country are almost empty, in some other countries too," he said.

Nauseda emphasized that some major EU countries have sufficient resources and should support Kiev.

Earlier in the day it was reported that EU countries have spent €47.3 billion on military aid to Ukraine since February 2022.

Before that, on December 17, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Poland could not provide military assistance to Ukraine in the previous volumes.

At the same time, Alexander Konkov, an associate professor of the political science department at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, shared his opinion with Izvestiya that the European countries' assistance to Ukraine resembles a game of "hot potato", as they shift the responsibility for financing Kiev onto each other.

Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine against the backdrop of Russia's special operation to protect Donbass, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
