More than 860 tons of fuel oil contaminated soil removed from Kuban beaches


After the accident with tankers in the Krasnodar region more than 860 tons of soil contaminated with oil products were removed. This was reported on Thursday, December 19, in the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia.
"Monitoring of the coastline for 70 kilometers continues. Additional oil slicks have not been found," - stated in the message of the department in Telegram-channel.
It is specified that 130 km of the coast has been surveyed. More than 5 thousand rescuers and volunteers are working at the scene.
The day before it was reported that rescuers and volunteers collected about 80 tons of oil products on the Black Sea coast after the accident with tankers in the Kerch Strait.
At the same time it was reported that the Central beach in the village of Veselovka, Temryuksky district, Krasnodar Territory, was cleaned of fuel oil.
Before that, on December 15, tankers "Volgoneft-212" and "Volgoneft-239" suffered a disaster in the Kerch Strait due to bad weather. As a result, there was a spill of oil products.
The first vessel evacuated 13 people: one of them died, 11 were injured. All 14 crew members were evacuated from the tanker Volgoneft-239 on Monday. Two criminal cases were opened over the incident, one of which was reclassified as more serious because of the death of a sailor.
Governor of the Krasnodar region Veniamin Kondratiev said that after the oil spill in four settlements of the Kuban introduced a state of high alert. Later, on December 17, he specified that after the accident with two tankers fuel oil was carried ashore for dozens of kilometers, two municipalities of the region introduced a state of emergency. Specialists have determined the algorithm of cleaning works.
Andrei Potakhov, acting head of the Emergency Situations Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in Krasnodar Krai, said on the same day that the fuel oil spilled in pockets and the cleanup of contaminated areas is complicated by the storm that brings oil products from the sea - in some areas, it is likely that the cleanup will have to be done again.
