Leaders of some European Union (EU) countries are annoyed that the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen makes decisions on her own, and asked the new head of the European Council António Costa to "tame" her. This was reported on December 19 by the American newspaper Politico.

"Irritation is growing among senior EU diplomats, who are expected to discuss recent unilateral forceful moves by the European Commission chief in between meetings of the bloc's leaders on Thursday," the publication said.

It is about the decision of the head of the EC to sign the EU trade agreement with the South American Common Market (Mercosur), which caused disagreement between France, Germany and Belgium, as well as the introduction of duties on electric cars from China. It is noted that at the upcoming summit, discussions will focus on taking independent steps by the President of the European Commission. This will be the first time such a discussion will take place under the leadership of Costa.

"The real conversation will be about von der Leyen and how far she can go," the publication quoted an EU diplomat as saying.

According to some EU officials, the reason for the resentment is not only von der Leyen's authoritarianism, but also the way she operates in general.

One EU official expressed the view that leadership in the European Union is "in shambles." According to him, the decision on Mercosur is almost a public humiliation of Paris.

Earlier, on December 8, it was reported that von der Leyen's new Mercosur agreement could cause a split in the European Union because of the emerging differences between France, Germany and Belgium.

Mercosur is an economic and political agreement on a common market of South American countries. The community was founded in 1991, and today it includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay

Before that, on December 7, it became known that more than a thousand citizens of the EU countries supported the lawsuit against the head of the EC because of possible violations with vaccines against COVID-19 during the pandemic.

November 27, Austrian politician Harald Wilimski in the European Parliament (EP) did not support the new composition of the EC headed by von der Leyen. According to him, the new commission advocates mass migration, imprisonment, incitement of war, deindustrialization and the decline of Europe.

On September 19, Politico said that Ursula von der Leyen had significantly strengthened her position in the newly formed EC and gained full control over EU affairs. According to the authors of the article, von der Leyen has been working for several months to eliminate opposition within the commission. Her rivals include Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services.
