Painted gingerbread is a popular treat and decoration for New Year's Eve. They attract attention both in appearance and flavor. Biologist Irina Lyalina, acting dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the State University of Education, told Izvestia on December 20 in detail about their benefits and harms.

"In themselves, such gingerbread using honey, spices (ginger, cinnamon, cloves) and natural glaze (egg white) are quite useful. Ginger, for example, helps strengthen the immune system and improve digestion. And gingerbread is also a quick source of energy thanks to sugar, and this is especially important in the cold season," she said.

According to her, it should be remembered that sweets are a pleasure, which is better to consume in small quantities. Their excessive consumption can lead to dental problems, high blood sugar levels and weight gain.

"In addition, if low-quality colorants are used to decorate gingerbread, it can be harmful, especially for children, causing them allergies or other negative reactions. There are a number of food dyes allowed under GOST, but they too should be limited. Also, a large amount of spices or products with gluten (in flour) can cause discomfort for people with sensitive stomachs or gluten intolerance," the biologist specified.

Lyalina added that it is best to make colored Christmas gingerbread at home, as this will allow to control its composition and avoid harmful additives. At the same time, you can choose high-quality ingredients and use natural coloring agents, such as beet juice (red), spinach (green) or turmeric (yellow).

By keeping a balance, you can enjoy delicious and beautiful gingerbread without compromising your health, the biologist concluded.

In November, Natalia Kharchenko, candidate of medical sciences, gastroenterologist at the European Medical Center (EMC), told Izvestia about how to make New Year's dishes healthier. According to the expert, it is better to prepare classic recipes of festive dishes without adding mayonnaise. She also advised to choose lean meat, not to overeat and to limit alcohol consumption or give preference to dry wines.
