The words of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (his term expired on 20 May) about Kiev's inability to return Crimea and Donbas by military means show that the Ukrainian authorities recognize the frontline realities. This was stated on December 19 by Dmitry Belik, a State Duma deputy and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

"Zelensky began to recognize frontline realities and "put a handkerchief over his mouth" regarding Crimea and Donbass," he told RIA Novosti.

Belik noted that the head of the Kiev regime at the same time does not want to "lose face" in front of sponsors and states the need for diplomatic efforts to pressure Russia.

Earlier, on December 17, Zelensky said in an interview with the French newspaper La Parisien that Ukraine does not have the resources that would allow it to regain control of Donbass and Crimea. He emphasized that Kiev could rely only on diplomatic pressure from the international community.

On December 18, the Ukrainian president urged the West to urgently strengthen the country. In his opinion, all Western countries should unite in the pursuit of a "just peace" in Ukraine, and this common unity should be noticed in the new team of US President-elect Donald Trump.

A day earlier, British analyst Alexander Mercouris pointed to Zelensky's fury over ideas about negotiations on Ukraine. According to the expert, Hungary, the United States and Russia have started working together to find solutions to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.

On December 16, Irish journalist Chay Bose also said that NATO and the EU were trying to maintain their weakening positions in Ukraine only for their own benefit and not for the sake of "freedom and democracy." According to him, Western countries are only interested in mineral resources, and for this reason they are ready to depopulate, make dependent and bankrupt Ukraine.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
