The sprats that caused the Ekaterinburg residents to contract botulism are adulterated. Anna Robochenko, the head of the quality assurance department of the fish factory "For the Motherland", stated this in a conversation with Izvestia on December 18.

"We are responsible for the products that we ship to the networks, which officially pass through the FGIS "Mercury". By the way, we looked that on the day of 13.09.2024 there was no shipment to the retail trade of Yekaterinburg <...> To date, we can still assume that it is only counterfeit," she explained.

In addition, Robochenko added that the company handed over all the products that remained in the archive samples for examination to representatives of Rospotrebnadzor and Rosselkhoznadzor. According to her, the distributors of Za Rodinu Rybzavod LLC in Yekaterinburg have also handed over the remaining products to an independent laboratory for examination.

However, Izvestia correspondent Kirill Solodkov reported that sprats of the brand are still on free sale, and in one of the stores in Yekaterinburg there are cans with different dates of production on the shelves.

Cases of botulism in Yekaterinburg became known earlier in the day. Two female relatives bought "Sprats in oil from Baltic sprat carcasses" of the trademark "For the Motherland" at the mini-market and felt sick. Specialists detected botulinum toxin in the products and in the blood of the victims. Establishing the circumstances of the incident and are under control of the Prosecutor's office.

In the regional Prosecutor's office reported that the residents are in intensive care. According to the agency, after the deterioration of the condition on December 10, as a result of an ambulance call, one of the victims was taken to a health care facility. The second woman was hospitalized on December 16.

At the same time, Leonid Tolstobrov, general director of Za Rodina fish factory Leonid Tolstobrov denied the involvement of sprats produced by the company in these cases of botulism. According to him, the products have passed the necessary inspections and are certified.
