A psychologist spoke about the importance of gifts in human relationships

Psychologist Elena Gorelova told on Wednesday, December 18, about why people want to give gifts to each other and what significance it has for human relations.
According to the expert, gift giving acts as a social glue that connects people. When a person gives a gift, it shows consideration and care for others. This can strengthen relationships by showing the recipient that they are important to the giver.
The psychologist says that the process of choosing a gift and giving it fosters deep emotional bonds, which is especially true in warm relationships, whether they are friendships, romantic connections or family ties.
"For those who can't always put their feelings into words, a gift becomes an ideal way to convey love, gratitude or support. For example, on a birthday, a gift can mean recognizing the importance of another person in your life, while a 'just because' gift can be a token of appreciation for no reason. This gesture often turns out to be more significant than the object itself, as it speaks about our feelings and intentions," the expert told RuNews24.ru.
She added that in most cultures gift-giving is an important ritual. Holidays such as Christmas, New Year or birthdays emphasize this aspect.
"Such traditions form a special atmosphere and create social norms that influence our behavior. By following these customs, we not only emphasize our social identity, but also participate in collective memories and values," she emphasized.
In turn, psychologist Elena Solovyova recommended not to buy gifts on credit. According to the expert, often a person who took a loan for an expensive gift starts to consider himself a rescuer and expects incredible gratitude for his deed, and when he does not receive it, he turns into an aggressor, RT reports.
On the same day, children's psychologist Irina Taranova told how to explain to a child why Santa Claus gave the wrong gift that he wanted. According to her, there is nothing particularly terrible in the non-fulfillment of children's wishes - it will not lead to severe disappointment and loss of faith in the miracle, writes RIAMO.
Herpetologist, serpentologist, snakeologist Vladislav Starkov in a conversation 360.ru said that giving a snake for the New Year is not a good idea, because the potential owner may not be ready to keep an exotic pet.
On December 18, "Izvestia" got acquainted with the results of the research of the service "Work.ru" and payment service "YUKassa", from which it follows that almost every fifth surveyed Russian (17%) has a tradition of organizing "Secret Santa" at work.
