European Union leaders in their talks with newly elected US President-elect Donald Trump insist on the need to maintain military support for Ukraine, the Newsweek newspaper reported on 18 December. This was reported by the Newsweek newspaper on December 18.

According to a European official who commented to the publication, the heads of European countries want the United States to continue to support Ukraine.

Members of Trump's team are holding talks with Ukrainian officials to discuss the "next phase" of the conflict. According to the deputy of the VerkhovnaRadaAlexandra Ustinova, Kiev is working directly with the Republican's team, supplemented "Gazeta.Ru".

Earlier in the day, The New York Times wrote that some members of the Republican party have a markedly reduced enthusiasm for funding arms supplies to Ukraine. Although in the weeks after Trump's election victory, some Republicans were still in favor of military aid to Kiev.

Prior to that, on Dec. 13, Trump's team said it was negotiating with the current White House administration and Ukrainian officials to end the conflict in Ukraine. On the same day, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, admitted the end of the conflict in Ukraine in the coming months. According to him, the US President-elect is capable of decisive action.

On December 11, it was reported that the Republican told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (whose term expired on May 20) and French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting in Paris that he wanted a ceasefire and negotiations. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, commenting on this, said that if the administration of the president-elect is serious about resolving the conflict in Ukraine, Russia is ready to consider the proposals.

Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine against the background of Russia's special operation to protect Donbas, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
