U.S. political analyst points out the impossibility of defeating Iran
It will not be possible to defeat Iran even if attacks are carried out on its territory. This statement was made on December 18 by political scientist, economist and Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs.
"There is no way to defeat Iran, even if we directly started bombing it," he said in an interview with Tucker Carlson published on the journalist's YouTube channel.
Sachs noted that Iran has very strong allies in the form of Russia and China. In addition, he added that the state is a member of the BRICS association and cooperates with the Russian Federation.
According to the expert, there are people in high positions in the United States thinking about continued escalation, which will result in the nuclear end of the world.
"Asking what will happen next, it is worth looking at whether [US President-elect Donald] Trump will be able to change [foreign policy] course. That's the most important question facing the U.S. right now," Sachs added.
The New York Times reported the day before, citing a poll, that a number of American congressmen favored the use of nuclear weapons by the US president without congressional approval in the event of an attack by another state. The poll was conducted among 530 congressmen who will begin work in the House of Representatives and the Senate in January 2025.
Before that, on December 13, The Wall Street Journal newspaper, citing informed sources, reported that Trump is considering preventive airstrikes on Iran in order to prevent the Islamic Republic from developing nuclear weapons. It was specified that this could contribute to the violation of the policy of deterrence of Tehran through diplomacy and sanctions. In addition, Iran's nuclear breakout is of great concern to Trump.
