The advance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in Kursk Region has been halted and attempts to break through groups of Ukrainian militants and mercenaries deep into Russia have been foiled. This was stated by the head of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov on December 18.

"The advance of the enemy has been stopped. Air strikes and artillery fire have foiled attempts to break through mobile groups of the AFU and foreign mercenaries deep into Russian territory," he said at a briefing.

Gerasimov noted that the Russian army fighters continue to destroy and squeeze Ukrainian militants and foreign mercenaries out of the settlements they occupied.

"During the period of combat operations in the Kursk border area, the enemy lost more than 42,000 people, over 1,800 tanks and armored vehicles, more than 350 artillery pieces, mortars and multiple rocket launchers," the head of the General Staff added.

Ukrainian militants suffer losses every day, including in the Kursk direction. Thus, on the eve of the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the AFU lost up to 260 military personnel over the day. Three armored fighting vehicles, five vehicles, a Croatian-made RAK-SA-12 multiple rocket launcher, two 122-millimeter D-30 howitzers, and an electronic warfare station were also destroyed.

The AFU attacked Russian positions in the border areas of Kursk Region on August 6. The situation in the region was recognized as a federal emergency. The liquidation of the Ukrainian militants who invaded the Russian territory is underway.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
