Court convicts gas workers over gas explosion in Kansk in 2023

The court handed down a guilty verdict to the employees of the gas company, whose fault was a gas explosion in a residential apartment building in Kansk in August 2023. This was reported on December 18 in the main investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Krasnoyarsk region and the Republic of Khakassia.

"The evidence collected by the investigative department <...> is recognized sufficient to pass a sentence against the fitter and foreman of the service "Kanskmezhraygaz" JSC "Krasnoyarskkraigaz". They were found guilty of violating safety rules in the conduct of gas hazardous works, resulting in negligent infliction of serious harm to human health", - stated in the message in Telegram-channel.

Thus, it was established that on August 4 last year in an apartment building on Kalandarishvili Street there was a domestic gas clap. The fitter, who was not authorized to perform gas-hazardous works, was installing gas pipelines and installing equipment in the apartments. After completion of the works he did not make sure that there were no defects, did not conduct proper pressure testing and started the gas, which led to a gas leakage of liquefied gas through a dismantled gas pipe in one of the apartments.

The investigation noted that the acting foreman of the "Kanskmezhraygaz" service, who was responsible for gas hazardous works, did not supervise the work and was actually absent from the scene.

As a result, 11 residents of the apartment building were injured to varying degrees of severity, including the health of two residents and one passerby was seriously injured. Property damage exceeded 13.5 million rubles, the common and personal property in 17 apartments was damaged, investigators added.

"The court sentence to the fitter was appointed punishment in the form of restriction of freedom for a period of 1 year, with deprivation of the right to engage in activities related to the organization and conduct of gas hazardous works for a period of 1 year, acting master - in the form of restriction of freedom for a period of 1 year 6 months, with deprivation of the right to engage in activities related to the organization and conduct of gas hazardous works for 1 year 6 months", - concluded in the department.
