The UN Security Council (UNSC) called for the implementation of the political process in Syria, based on the principles of resolution 2254. This became known from the statement of the Security Council on December 17.

"Now is the time to reassure all Syrians that their interests in the future are clear and that they will be embodied in credible and inclusive transitional arrangements," the Security Council said in a statement on the social network X (former Twitter).

The text of the statement, which was supported by UNSC members, refers to the importance of executing a process that will allow for a peaceful resolution to the current situation. In addition, the Council members reaffirmed their commitment to preserving Syria's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and called on other countries to respect such principles.

"There is great hope that Syria now has a real chance to move towards peace, economic stability and growth, inclusion of all Syrians, accountability and justice," the statement said.

The statement also drew attention to the activities of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the Golan Heights. The UNSC members called on Israeli forces to abide by the terms of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and to respect the inviolability of diplomats and consuls in accordance with international law.

Earlier on December 9, Iran condemned Israel's military incursion into Syria and called on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to respond to it. At the same time, Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh said that Damascus plans to notify the UN Security Council (UNSC) that the IDF strikes and the actions of its military in the Golan Heights are a violation of the republic's sovereignty by Israel.

On the same day, media reported that the Israeli army's military entered the neighboring state's controlled territory for the first time since 1973 as part of an operation in the buffer zone on the border with Syria. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that this is a temporary measure, which is motivated by the defense of Israel.

On December 8, Syria's national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces said it had begun work on forming a transitional authority. For his part, SAR Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that he was ready to cooperate with any leadership of the country that would be elected, and most of the Syrian ministers remain in Damascus.

Against this backdrop, the IDF announced the deployment of forces along the Syrian border to guarantee the safety of Israeli citizens and communities in the Golan Heights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the demarcation agreement with Syria has been terminated due to the Syrian withdrawal. The Israeli military later took control of Mount Hermon.

The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
