- Media learned of Canada's intention to spend $900 million to secure the border with the U.S.

Canada will spend $900 million to secure the border with the United States. This was reported on December 17 by CBC TV channel with reference to the country's Minister of Public Security Dominic LeBlanc.
It is noted that such an initiative arose after the threat of US President-elect Donald Trump to impose a tariff of 25% on Canadian imports.
"The federal government said that today it will release details on how it intends to spend 1.3 billion Canadian dollars (about $900 million - Ed.) to secure the border between Canada and the United States, trying to dispel the fears of President-elect Donald Trump," - stated in the material.
According to the channel, the government plans to purchase helicopters and drones. It is noted that the Canadian authorities intend to allocate more resources to strengthen control over the common border.
Earlier, on December 3, during a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump said that Canada could become the 51st state of the United States if Ottawa fails to solve the problem of illegal migration and drug smuggling. The President-elect of the United States also noted that he will impose import duties of 25% on all Canadian goods as early as the day of his inauguration, January 20, 2025, if Ottawa fails to fundamentally change the situation with migration across the Canadian border.
Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland commented on December 11 that the Canadian government is determined to defend its national interests.
