- Political analyst predicted NATO's failure to fulfill Kiev's demand to supply air defense systems to the army

NATO countries are unlikely to seriously consider the demand of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose term of office expired in May, to supply the country's army with 12-15 air defense systems as compensation for his refusal to be invited to the alliance. This opinion was expressed by Alexander Konkov, associate professor of the political science department of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, on Tuesday, December 17.
He noted that Zelensky is not in the position to make demands with regard to the European Union (EU), with regard to NATO countries, with regard to any states, despite the fact that they provide and have provided him with quite active support in recent years.
"Because really no one owes anything to anyone in this case," the political scientist said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru.
Konkov doubted that Westerners in the will seriously consider the outbursts of this kind.
Earlier, Zelensky said that Western allies should supply Ukraine with 12-15 air defense systems as compensation for refusing to invite it to NATO, RT reported.
According to the Ukrainian leader, this requires only the political will of Western partners, the kp.ru website reported.
According to him, Western countries promised to hand over the necessary installations after they recognized the impossibility of Ukraine's membership in the bloc. He also reminded that the security of his country depends on the political will of the US and Europe, and they are in no hurry to fulfill their commitments, 360.ru reported.
Earlier, on December 11, the governor of the Kherson region, Volodymyr Saldo, said that Russia should not allow the presence of a NATO contingent in Ukraine even after the special operation is over. He pointed to a change in rhetoric by Zelensky, who now admits that the country will not join the North Atlantic Alliance until the conflict is over and instead demands the redeployment of Western troops to Ukraine.
On December 5, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that in the current situation, the FRG would not send its troops to Ukraine. Poland, for its part, also ruled out the transfer of military forces to Ukraine.
At the same time, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said in December that the German peacekeeping contingent could be sent to Ukraine after the conflict is over. In addition, Politico reported the same month that French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss the deployment of peacekeeping forces to Ukraine with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk during their meeting in Warsaw on Thursday, December 12. The Russian Foreign Ministry warned that sending a peacekeeping contingent to Ukraine would be perceived by Russia as participation of third countries in the conflict.
Ukraine applied to join NATO on an accelerated basis on September 30, 2022. At the time, Zelenskyy said that in fact the country was already in the alliance and met its standards. The country applied for EU membership on February 28, 2022.
