US President-elect Donald Trump will not forget about Kiev's role in two attempts to announce his impeachment. This was stated by the former head of the Ukrainian foreign Ministry Vadym Prystayko on December 17.

"Trump will not be able to forget that they tried to use impeachment against him twice. In the history of the United States, this has never happened before. He is the first, and it's all to do with Ukraine," he said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

Prystayko noted that if Kiev had behaved more cautiously, this development could have been avoided.

In the fall of 2019 in the United States, the Democrats began the process of collecting evidence to declare impeachment of President Trump. They accused the Republican of pressuring Ukraine in order to discredit his rival in the 2020 presidential election from Democrats Joe Biden. The basis for the accusation was Trump's conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024), during which the Republican allegedly tried to induce the Ukrainian leader to investigate a corruption scandal involving Biden's son Hunter. On February 5, 2020, the upper house of the U.S. parliament exonerated Trump.

On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters rioted in Washington amid the presidential election. During the protests, they stormed the Capitol. There were clashes with the police, during which dozens of people on both sides were injured, five people died. Then the US House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump, he was accused of sedition. As a result, the politician was acquitted.

Earlier, on December 13, the Trump team said that it was negotiating with the current White House administration and Ukrainian officials to end the conflict in Ukraine. It was noted that the Republican has not yet presented concrete plans for a peaceful settlement. On the same day, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg admitted the end of the conflict in Ukraine in the coming months. According to him, the US President-elect is capable of decisive action on conflict resolution.

Reuters reported on December 11 that the U.S. president-elect told Ukrainian leader Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting in Paris that he wanted a ceasefire and negotiations. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, commenting on this, said that if the president-elect's administration is serious about resolving the conflict in Ukraine, Russia is ready to consider the proposals.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
