Political analyst points to China's ability to stabilize the situation in Syria

China has an opportunity to stabilize the situation in Syria if the new government in Damascus allows Beijing to assist. Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, told Izvestia on December 17.
"There are several planes on which China traditionally works. Of course, this is the economic plane, in this respect China can economically and financially stabilize the situation in Syria," he said.
In addition, the political scientist added, China has gained quite a positive experience of peacemaking in recent years. Thus, Beijing can offer Damascus political weight - the PRC can hold effective negotiations with Syria's neighbors regarding their non-interference in the country's state affairs.
"China is a global power, and its interests are now already in all regions of the modern world. Syria may be interesting for China in a number of aspects, but first of all it is, I think, hydrocarbons and a very good geopolitical location," the interlocutor of the publication explained.
Earlier in the day, RIA Novosti reported that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China will help Syria to protect sovereignty and restore stability.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, in turn, on the eve suggested normalizing the situation in Syria through an inclusive dialogue. The ministry noted that the country is home to representatives of two confessions - Muslims and Christians. The Foreign Ministry expressed hope that "Syria will continue to remain a homeland for all its citizens regardless of their confessional affiliation."
Also on Dec. 16, former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad announced that he had no intention of resigning, but left the country when government army positions fell. Assad noted that he moved to Latakia province when the opposition forces penetrated Damascus.
The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by militias in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
