Court in St. Petersburg recognizes "Church of Scientology" group as extremist


The religious group "Church of Scientology of St. Petersburg" was recognized as an extremist organization at the request of the prosecutor's office. This was reported on December 17 in the official Telegram channel of the St. Petersburg prosecutor's office.
It is specified that the activity of the group was aimed at incitement of hatred and hostility, humiliation of dignity of people on the basis of belonging to social groups, call for refusal to comply with public rules and laws. In addition, the participants of the "Church of Scientology" distributed extremist literature.
"In order to protect the interests of the state, society and an indefinite circle of persons, the city prosecutor's office appealed to the court with a claim to recognize this religious group as an extremist organization and ban its activities on the territory of the Russian Federation", - said in the message of the department.
The St. Petersburg court satisfied the requirements of the prosecutor's office, the agency said.
Earlier, on December 13, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that the Russian Security Council discuss a strategy to counter extremism.
