Behind the fake report in the Western media about the alleged death of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a plane crash were special services of the countries that are interested in the Arab Republic's chaos. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on December 17.

"This (Reuters publication. - Ed.) is an example of a classic fake with all the necessary components. For what purpose? One hundred percent behind it were the relevant services of the countries interested in chaos on the territory of Syria, in order to solve some of their point tasks through this "news"," the diplomat said on the air of Channel One.

Reuters on December 8 spread a report, citing alleged data from Syrian army officers, that Assad, who left the country, could have died in a plane crash. The same day it became known that Assad was in Moscow with his family.

On December 9, the Russian Foreign Ministry officially reported that the Syrian leader, after negotiations with the opposition, left the post of head of state and left the country, instructing to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Assad's departure from the presidency was his personal decision.

On the same day, Syria's national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces said it was working to form a transitional authority. In turn, Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that most of the ministers of the Syrian government remain in Damascus, and he himself is ready to cooperate with any elected leadership.

Against this backdrop, the IDF announced the deployment of forces along the Syrian border to ensure the safety of communities in the Golan Heights and Israeli citizens. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the demarcation agreement with Syria has been terminated due to the withdrawal of Syrian troops. Later it was reported that the Israeli military took control of Mount Hermon. On December 16, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that it was necessary to normalize the situation in Syria through an inclusive inter-Syrian dialogue.

The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
