China executes ex-government official who misappropriated hundreds of millions of dollars for himself

In the People's Republic of China (PRC) executed an ex-official who misappropriated hundreds of millions of dollars. This was reported by CCTV on December 17.

"According to the decision of the Supreme People's Court, in the morning of December 17, 2024, the Intermediate People's Court of Hingang County, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, carried out the execution of Li Jianping in accordance with the law," - stated in the report.

It is noted that Li Jianping is the former secretary of the working committee of the Communist Party of China in the economic and technological development zone of Huh-Hoto city. It is known that he misappropriated more than 1.43 billion yuan (more than $199 million). He also received 577 million yuan (more than $80 million) from others and misused more than 1.05 billion yuan (more than $146 million) of public funds.

The Supreme People's Court sentenced Li Jianping to death in 2022. The former official appealed, but the court upheld the sentence.

Earlier this fall, Wang Dewei, a former vice governor of China's Liaoying province, was sentenced to death for a bribe of 555 million yuan (more than $70 million). The investigation found that Dewei received the cash for assisting unknown individuals in a state promotion from 2008 to 2022.
