A military court has sentenced Vasily Zharkov, accused of state treason, participation in the terrorist organization "Russian Freedom Legion" (recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in Russia) and preparation of sabotage at strategic facilities in the Moscow region, to 19 years in prison. This was reported to "Izvestia" in court on December 16.

The sentence was passed by the 2nd Western District Military Court. Zharkov was found guilty of committing crimes under Art. 30 ч. 1, Art. 281.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Attempt to promote sabotage activities"), Part 2, Art. 205.5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Participation in a terrorist organization") and Art. 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("State treason").

On the aggregate of the charges, the court sentenced him to 19 years in a strict regime colony.

The convict himself did not admit guilt, and his lawyer explained the actions of his client "hormonal failure due to the lack of love relationships" - such a position of the defense caused great surprise to Zharkov's relatives and friends.

Earlier, on December 12, a resident of Kursk region was sentenced to 22 years in prison in the case of state treason and commission of a terrorist act. He was also given a fine of 400 thousand rubles and restriction of freedom for a period of two years. It was found that from November 2023 to February 2024 he collected and transferred to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) data on transport infrastructure facilities to the detriment of Russian security. In addition, the man detonated a pyrotechnic device in front of the public reception office of a political party in the city, and as part of an organized group committed an act of terrorism - arson in the branch of a charitable organization in Kursk.
