Israel is pursuing an aggressive policy against the backdrop of the crisis in Syria and intends to benefit from it by gaining a foothold in the Golan Heights. This was stated by Alexander Khazaridi, political scientist and expert of the Polylog Group, in a conversation with Izvestia on December 16.

Thus, he noted, against the backdrop of regime change in Syria, every geopolitical player interested in the redistribution of forces in the Middle East is taking active steps to strengthen itself, take a part of the territory, preserve or strengthen economic and military influence.

"Syria has once again turned out to be the battlefield of hybrid warfare. <...> Israel, as we see, demonstrates an aggressive position and wants to become the main beneficiary of the results of the turbulent period in Syria," the expert emphasized.

Israel's task, the interlocutor of the publication believes, is to gain a foothold in the Syrian territories in the former buffer zone in the Golan Heights. At the same time, there is no certainty that the UN will take decisive steps to prevent this, he concluded.

Earlier, on December 8, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with the opposition, left the post of head of state and left the country, instructing to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. On the same day, the national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces in Syria announced that it was working on the formation of a transitional authority.

Against this backdrop, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the deployment of forces along the Syrian border to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens and communities in the Golan Heights. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the demarcation agreement with Syria has been terminated due to the withdrawal of Syrian troops.

The situation in Syria has escalated following a major attack by militias in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to a Syrian army response against the militants.
