Control of hemoglobin level in blood is important for maintaining health, as it is responsible for oxygen transport to cells and removal of carbon dioxide. Low or high levels of this component can signal various diseases, Svetlana Burnatskaya, a general practitioner, occupational pathologist at JSC Medicine (Clinic of Academician Roitberg), told Izvestia on December 17.

"One of the main conditions that require control of hemoglobin levels is anemia, when its content in the blood is lower than normal. This can be caused by a deficiency of iron, vitamins, chronic diseases, as well as genetic disorders," - said the doctor.

She specified that anemia is often found in kidney, liver, lung diseases, as well as in pregnant women, when the body's needs for nutrients increase. Chronic blood loss also requires attention to hemoglobin levels, the expert added.

"However, elevated hemoglobin levels can be dangerous. It is found in diseases such as polycythemia and can lead to an increased risk of thrombosis and overloading of the heart and lungs. In such cases, the hemoglobin level should be reduced to avoid complications," emphasized Burnatskaya.

At the same time, low hemoglobin level is manifested by fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath and weakness. In severe cases, it can lead to cardiovascular disease. High levels cause headaches, dizziness, increased clotting and organ strain, the GP explained.

"To increase hemoglobin levels in mild anemia, it is enough to include foods rich in iron and vitamins in the diet, as well as increase physical activity. However, if the hemoglobin level deviates significantly from the norm, a doctor's consultation is required. It is also necessary to consult a specialist in case of prolonged or pronounced symptoms", - said Burnatskaya.

At the same time, she said, to improve hemoglobin levels, it is useful to increase the consumption of meat products, fish, liver and products containing vitamin C, which improves the absorption of iron. Folic acid and vitamin B12 are also important for the formation of red blood cells. In addition, physical activity and avoiding bad habits will also help keep hemoglobin levels normal.

"Before undertaking changes in diet or lifestyle, it is important to consult a doctor to prevent possible complications and get the right recommendations," reminded the occupational pathologist.

Earlier, on December 12, gastroenterologist of the European Medical Center EMC Natalia Kharchenko told "Izvestia" that the habit of eating at least 400 g of fruits and vegetables daily reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, increase in body weight and cholesterol levels, the development of cancer, diabetes and purine metabolism. At the same time, she emphasized that, according to the norms of the Ministry of Health of Russia and recommendations on proper nutrition, an adult should eat 800-1000 g of fruits and vegetables every day.
