On New Year's Eve, many people write down their wishes on a piece of paper, then burn it and add the ashes to a glass of champagne. There is a belief that if you manage to drink from this glass while the chimes are ringing, the wish will come true. Expert of the laboratory "Hemotest" doctor-gastroenterologist Ekaterina Kashukh told "Izvestia" about the harm of such a drink.

"Usually a wish is written on a small piece of paper, such an amount of ash will not affect health in any way. For this tradition, it is better to choose napkins and not to use colored, coated or office paper, which is treated with dyes and other toxic substances," Kashukh explained.

According to her, against the background of gastronomic liberties that people allow themselves on New Year's Eve, a small amount of ash is unlikely to worsen the situation, but with chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract it is better not to conduct such experiments. In addition, it is important to adhere to basic safety rules, first of all, making sure that the ashes do not contain large particles and badly burned pieces of paper, from which you can choke.

According to the doctor, it is much more important not to overuse champagne at the holiday table. This drink is quite deceptive, as it is easy to drink, and as a result, you can unnoticeably drink too much. It is necessary to monitor the amount of alcohol consumed, and in the presence of diseases it is better to abandon sparkling altogether in favor of ordinary wine or non-alcoholic alternatives. It is worth remembering that there are actually no safe standards for alcohol consumption.

"Alcohol in combination with high acidity of the drink can provoke inflammation in the stomach and intestines, cause heartburn. Champagne provokes appetite, gives a load on the liver, kidneys and cardiovascular system and often causes headaches and severe hangovers," summarized Kashukh.

Earlier, on November 24, Natalia Kharchenko, candidate of medical sciences, gastroenterologist at the European Medical Center (EMC), told Izvestia about the most harmful New Year's dishes. According to her, excessive alcohol consumption also causes enormous harm to the body. Firstly, alcohol provokes appetite. Secondly, overeating, especially together with alcohol, is dangerous for people with GI diseases.
