Alzheimer's disease is characterized by a sharp decline in intellectual abilities. Clear signs: a person forgets or confuses the functional purpose of things. Irina Volgina, associate professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, told Izvestia on December 18 about the signs of Alzheimer's disease.

"The causes of Alzheimer's disease have not been established. Mostly, they talk about the role of genetic factors or lifestyle. A person of intellectual profession who leads a healthy lifestyle has a lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. And the one who is engaged in physical labor and has bad habits is higher," Volgina explained.

According to her, the probability of getting sick is higher in those who experienced depression and suffered a severe form of coronavirus. Alzheimer's disease usually begins in people over the age of 70. However, if the patient has a history of mental disorders or has suffered a stroke, the disease can manifest at a younger age, up to the age of 40.

The disease manifests itself in a significant deterioration of mental abilities. The vivid symptoms are: loss of memory about the purpose of objects or confusion with them. A person can, for example, put food in the cupboard in response to a request to put the kettle on, do not recognize relatives or call them by other names. Going somewhere, he suddenly does not understand where he is, gets lost in space and does not remember his address, the expert notes.

According to the expert, it is important to stimulate the brain, for example, by reading books, solving crossword puzzles and learning foreign languages. In addition, you should adhere to a healthy lifestyle: eat right, avoid bad habits and engage in physical activity. All of these combine to promote mental health.

"In Alzheimer's disease, first of all, mental function, memory, thinking are affected. Therefore, prevention of the disease is intellectual exercise. It is no coincidence that those who work longer and retire later are less likely to suffer from Alzheimer's disease, and those who retired early, on the contrary, in the risk zone," - summarized the expert.

Earlier, on December 6, professor of the Department of Therapy of the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, therapist Oksana Pivovarova told Izvestia about the main risks of dementia and its signs. According to her, smoking, which negatively affects the brain vessels, thereby reducing the flow of oxygen to tissues and increasing hypoxia, leads to the development of dementia.
