The European Union countries are not discussing sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. This was announced on December 16 by Kaja Kallas, Deputy President of the European Commission (EC) and former Prime Minister of Estonia, upon her arrival at a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

"In order to send peacekeepers to Ukraine, there must be peace there," Kallas said.

She also added that there can be no talk on this topic, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson that Russia will not back down from its goals in the special operation.

Prior to that, on December 12, newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump proposed deploying European Union troops to Ukraine to monitor the ceasefire. According to WSJ, Trump believes that Europe should take the main role in securing and supporting Ukraine, while the US can support the process, but has no plans to send its troops.

On December 11, Politico reported that French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk the deployment of peacekeeping forces to Ukraine during their meeting in Warsaw on December 12.

Also in December, the chairman of the Bundestag's defense committee, Markus Faber, spoke out against sending peacekeepers to Ukraine,Gazeta.Ruadds.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
