The data on the state of the marine environment under the influence of climate change, obtained after the 56th voyage of the research vessel Akademik Boris Petrov, will be used to develop a regional module of ecological and climatic monitoring of the Baltic Sea. This was reported to "Izvestia" in the press service of the Institute of Oceanology named after P.P. Shirshov. P.P. Shirshov RAS on Monday, December 16.

"Academician Boris Petrov" stayed in the expedition in the waters of the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea from June 16 to July 13. Researchers collected data concerning the evolution of marine landscapes. Changes occurring to the seabed under the influence of various factors should help predict further climatic and environmental changes.

As noted in the press service, the work was carried out as part of the implementation of the most important innovative project of national importance (VIP GZ) under the state program "Science".

The data collected during the expedition will form the basis of new landscape maps and paleographic reconstructions. They will also allow for better forecasting of climate change.

No less important part of the scientists' work was the monitoring of marine ecosystem transformations. New data are necessary for further environmentally friendly nature management.

At the same time, detailed geophysical studies of underwater dunes were carried out during the expedition. The obtained information is relevant due to the fact that some areas are suitable for building up artificial beaches in the Kaliningrad region.

Earlier, on November 27, Moscow schoolchildren and students went on an expedition to Antarctica. A total of 13 schoolchildren and college students took part.
